Keep Her Fresh – How to Cure

Keep your flower fresh and learn how to cure your flower. You spent time finding good cannabis, or maybe growing, drying, and curing it. You want that flower to stay full of flavor and remain fresh. Fortunately, keeping cannabis fresh is easy. The four things to control are light, heat, air, and moisture.

Airtight Container

For long term storage, clean, airtight containers, glass Mason-type jars, are best for curing.  Glass Mason jars have good seal which limits unnecessary exposure to fresh air and helps maintain a stable environment around the flower.

Plastic Baggies

Plastic bags may be convenient for short term use, but they are not ideal for extended storage. Plastic bags allow the flower to become crushed or overly dry. Choose a container that reasonably matches the amount of cannabis being stored. A huge jar containing only a small amount of flower leaves unnecessary air inside.

Keep Cannabis in the Dark

Cannabis likes the dark. Light is not cannabis’s friend during curing process.

Research examined cannabinoid stability and found that exposure to light accelerates the degradation of THC. In a four year storage study, cannabis kept at room temperature and exposed to light experienced substantially greater cannabinoid changes than material stored under colder and darker conditions.

Keep It Cool

Heat also speeds cannabinoid degradation. A recent, 2026 study compared cannabis products stored at room temperature, refrigerated, and froze. The research found that lower temperatures provided better long term cannabinoid stability, particularly for THC rich material.

For ordinary household storage, a cool, dark, temperature stable location is the simplest option. Refrigerators are not good because of temperature and humidity changes when opened, which create moisture management problems.

Freezing may make sense for exceptionally long term storage because controlled studies have shown excellent cannabinoid preservation at approximately -20°C (68°F). But repeatedly freezing, thawing, and reopening cannabis is not ideal.

Humidity Matters

Cannabis should not be bone dry, but too much moisture can create conditions favorable to mold.

ASTM’s cannabis storage standard recommends maintaining dried cannabis flower at a water activity between 0.55 and 0.65, which roughly corresponds to maintaining a balanced humidity environment inside a sealed container. Below that range, flower can become brittle and above that range, the risk of microbial growth increases.

Commercial humidity control packs designed for cannabis can help maintain that balance.

The Bottom Line

Good cannabis storage is surprisingly simple. A person needs an airtight container, a cool location, darkness, and controlled moisture.

Cannabis can retain its aroma, texture, and cannabinoids far longer than flower left exposed to light, heat, and air. Cannabis will still slowly change with age, but good storage can dramatically slow that process.

The goal isn’t to stop time, it is to make your cannabis cure slowly and tasty.
